Latouche Island

Horseshoe Bay State Marine Park

Excellent Holding Easy Approach

Horseshoe Bay State Marine Park — Anchorage Guide

Horseshoe Bay State Marine Park is located on the western coast of Latouche Island, directly across Latouche Passage from the remote Alutiiq village of Chenega Bay. This premium, deep-water bay offers exceptionally secure moorage and a fascinating window into the sub-arctic mining history of the western Sound.

⚓ Moorage & Anchoring Tactics

Horseshoe Bay is widely regarded as one of the most secure, high-protection anchorages in the southern Sound:

  • Outstanding Wind Protection: The horseshoe-shaped topography shields vessels from the rolling swells of Latouche Passage and the open Gulf. It is open only to minor northeast winds.
  • Deep Water Moorage: The bay features standard depths of 30–80 feet over a flat, highly reliable mud and clay bottom. Anchoring quality is excellent, providing superb holding even in heavy gales.
  • Easy Approach: The entrance channel is broad and free of submerged moraine sills or narrow reef hazards, allowing straightforward entry even in low visibility or night transits.

⛏️ Historical Copper Mining Legacy

Latouche Island has a prominent industrial past:

  • Latouche Copper Boom: In the early 20th century (1900–1930), the island was home to a booming copper mining operation (Kennecott Copper Corp’s Beatson Mine), producing millions of tons of ore.
  • Historic Exploration: Mariners can hike the old logging trails to explore historical structural foundations, old mining shafts, and tailing piles.
  • [!WARNING] Safety Hazards: Old shafts, rusted industrial cabling, and unstable structural ruins dot the forest Uplands. Stay on established gravel paths and never enter gated mine shafts.

📋 Critical Mariner Checklist

  • Check scope at High Tide: With a major vertical tide swing, ensure you drop anchor with at least a 5:1 scope at high tide to prevent dragging.
  • Coordinate with Chenega Bay: If you require fuel or emergency support, the village of Chenega Bay is just across the passage (coordinates [-148.07, 60.06]).
  • Secure Food Packs: Brown bears and black bears are active on Latouche Island. Keep a clean camp, utilizing bear locks where available.
