Region Overview & Navigation

Esther Passage is one of the most celebrated scenic cruising passages in Prince William Sound. Running north-south between Esther Island and the mainland, the passage is bordered by dense spruce forests and sheer granite faces that rise out of the dark water.

  • Moraine Sills: The northern and southern entrances of the passage feature shallow terminal moraines. The northwestern entrance sill is highly shallow at low tide and demands close monitoring of the depth sounder. Power vessels with significant draft should time transit with a rising tide.
  • Speed Limits: The passage is a narrow waterway frequented by sea kayaks, tour boats, and smaller pleasure craft. Keep wake minimal and remain vigilant for oncoming traffic around sharp blind turns.
  • Anchorages: The passage houses the beautiful and popular Surprise Cove State Marine Park, which offers highly protected anchorages and secure holding.

ADF&G Salmon Fishery Net Maze Alert

This region transits the Coghill District (WNH Hatchery Terminal Area). During active commercial drift-gillnetting and purse-seine openings, hundreds of commercial fishing vessels deploy nets stretching 900 to 1,500 feet across the channel.

District Coverage: Coghill District (WNH Hatchery Terminal Area)
Standard Summer Openings: Frequent summer purse seine and gillnet openings in Lake Bay / Esther Passage
Navigation Directives inside Net Mazes:
  • Reduce Speed: Keep vessel at slow transit speeds to avoid drifting gillnets which float just below the surface.
  • Never Cross Seine Halves: Do not pass between a seining vessel and its active seine skiff. The net block is absolute.
  • Active Radio Watch: Keep VHF radio tuned to Channel 16 and Channel 10 (standard local commercial coordination).
  • Identify Net Markers: Look for orange or red poly-balls marking the tail-ends of drift nets. Pass at least 150 feet clear of buoy markers.
