A massive, rugged, and deeply indented island in the central Sound, famous for its labyrinth of pristine bays, coves, and challenging wilderness cruising.
Knight Island is the wild heart of Prince William Sound. Covering a huge expanse in the central Sound, the island is characterized by its high peaks, thick coastal rainforest, and countless long, fjord-like arms that indent its shores.
Navigation & Safety
Rugged Hazards: The coastlines of Knight Island are littered with submerged rocks, kelp beds, and navigation hazards. Extreme care must be taken when entering uncharted bays or approaching close to the shoreline. Always maintain a close watch on the sonar.
Exposure: The outer (eastern) shores of the island are fully exposed to the swells and weather systems of the Gulf of Alaska. The inner coves (such as the Bay of Isles) offer excellent, highly protected wilderness shelter.
Wildlife: The island has completely recovered from the 1989 oil spill and is now a thriving sanctuary for sea otters, black bears, bald eagles, and killer whales.

This region transits the Southwestern District (Purse Seine). During active commercial drift-gillnetting and purse-seine openings, hundreds of commercial fishing vessels deploy nets stretching 900 to 1,500 feet across the channel.
District Coverage: Southwestern District (Purse Seine)
Standard Summer Openings: Intermittent seine openings (verify via ADF&G announcements)
Navigation Directives inside Net Mazes:
Reduce Speed: Keep vessel at slow transit speeds to avoid drifting gillnets which float just below the surface.
Never Cross Seine Halves: Do not pass between a seining vessel and its active seine skiff. The net block is absolute.
Active Radio Watch: Keep VHF radio tuned to Channel 16 and Channel 10 (standard local commercial coordination).
Identify Net Markers: Look for orange or red poly-balls marking the tail-ends of drift nets. Pass at least 150 feet clear of buoy markers.
Search public Prince William Sound community pages, groups, and fishing logs for active catch reports, target locations, or transit obstacles (shrimping, salmon, halibut).
Quick Scans:
🔒 Search Integrity: Scanning triggers custom search indexing on public Facebook groups and pages for PWS, opening results in a separate browser window. All search logs remain local.
