    Depart Whittier. Head northeast through Passage Canal. Harbor no-wake zone strictly enforced.

    Transit northeast. Watch for ferry traffic and tow vessels on VHF 16.

    Passage Canal East Approach
    Continue northeast past the Whittier tide station. Portage Glacier drainage visible north.

    Enter Port Wells. Begin bearing north-northwest toward Pigot Point.

    Pass west of Pigot Point into upper Port Wells. Open water briefly — assess conditions.

    Cross upper Port Wells bearing northwest toward Culross Island. Watch for whale activity.

Overview

One of the most accessible and scenic routes in PWS — a gentle transit through protected Passage Canal and Port Wells into the sheltered Culross Passage. Excellent for new PWS mariners and families seeking calm conditions.

Route Description

Leg 1 — Whittier to Port Wells (15nm) Transit northeast through Passage Canal, then turn north across Port Wells. This is the only exposed segment — swell can build in NE conditions. Complete this segment early morning.

Leg 2 — Port Wells to Culross Passage (13nm) Once you round Culross Island and enter the passage, conditions are calm and protected. Excellent whale-watching territory the entire length.

  • Cell service: intermittent in Passage Canal, none in Culross Passage
